Changes to Soverign Immunity Effective Immediately

Posted By: Rebecca DeLorenzo

Important: a significant and immediate change to Sovereign Immunity that affects our work and the patients we serve. During the 2024 session, the Florida Legislature approved a new law, Chapter 2024-015, Laws of Florida, regarding health care. This new law, which took effect upon being signed by Governor Ron DeSantis on March 21, 2024, amends section 766.1115 of the Florida Statutes, impacting the eligibility requirements for the Volunteer Health Care Provider Program.

Effective immediately, the maximum income a patient may have in order to be considered low-income has been raised from 200 percent to 300 percent of the federal poverty level. This change presents a significant opportunity for us to extend our services to a broader range of individuals and families in need within our communities. For additional details regarding the amended legislation, please see the attached memorandum.
