Member Highlight: Building a Strong Volunteer Pipeline at Wildflower Healthcare
Volunteers are the heart of every free and charitable clinic. While recruiting clinical providers is often top of mind, many organizations also rely on volunteers for patient support, administration, interpretation, outreach, fundraising, marketing, and countless other essential roles.
At FAFCC, we've noticed something encouraging over the past several months: more and more individuals are reaching out through our website looking for volunteer opportunities at member clinics across Florida. The desire to serve is there.
The question is: Can potential volunteers easily find your clinic and take the next step?
One member clinic that's answering that question with a resounding "yes" is Wildflower Healthcare in St. Augustine.
Member Highlight: Wildflower Healthcare

At Wildflower Healthcare in St. Augustine, Florida, our volunteer recruitment efforts are rooted in visibility, accessibility, and strong community connections.
One of our primary tools is a dedicated volunteer application link on our website, which allows interested individuals to easily learn about opportunities and begin the onboarding process. We also consistently share this information during community events and outreach efforts so people know there is always a clear pathway to get involved.
In addition, Michelle and I actively engage with local educational institutions to connect with individuals eager to gain hands-on experience while giving back. We regularly attend events at First Coast Technical College (FCTC), where dental assistant graduates are looking for opportunities to apply their skills in a clinical setting. We also collaborate with local nursing programs and training schools, inviting students to volunteer and gain meaningful exposure to patient care.
The Florida FRAME (Florida Reimbursement Assistance for Medical Education) Program has also played an important role in helping Wildflower Healthcare build and sustain a strong volunteer provider network. The program offers eligible healthcare professionals the opportunity to receive educational loan repayment in exchange for serving underserved communities. Because of this incentive, Wildflower has been able to connect with physicians and other medical professionals who are passionate about giving back while reducing their student loan burden. FRAME participants help expand access to care for our patients, strengthen our volunteer workforce, and often become long-term partners in our mission to provide compassionate healthcare to our underserved community.
Overall, our success has come from meeting people where they are—whether online, at community events, or through educational partnerships—and making it simple, meaningful, and impactful for them to get involved.
Lessons for Every Clinic
Wildflower's approach demonstrates that successful volunteer recruitment doesn't always require a large marketing budget. Often, it's about making opportunities visible and removing barriers for people who already want to help.
As you think about your own volunteer recruitment efforts, consider a few simple questions:
- Does your website have an easy-to-find volunteer page or application?
- Is there a clear contact person for volunteer inquiries?
- Are your volunteer opportunities shared during community events or presentations?
- Have you built relationships with local colleges, universities, technical schools, or healthcare training programs?
- Are you taking advantage of programs like FRAME that connect healthcare professionals with organizations serving underserved communities?
- If someone visited your website today wanting to volunteer, would they know exactly what to do next?
Even small improvements can make a significant difference.
FAFCC Can Help Connect Volunteers
When individuals contact FAFCC looking for volunteer opportunities, we're always happy to direct them to member clinics. The clinics that benefit most, however, are those with up-to-date websites, clear volunteer information, and an easy way for interested individuals to get in touch.
The interest is there. By making your volunteer opportunities accessible, your clinic can turn that interest into lasting community support.
