Bringing Vision Care to Students: Expanding Access—and Changing Lives
Access to vision care can be a significant challenge for many families—especially when transportation, time, or availability stand in the way. The Florida Lions Eye Clinic is working to change that through innovative approaches that expand access and meet patients where they are.
Meeting Students Where They Are

To address transportation barriers that often prevent children from accessing care, the Clinic has implemented a mobile, school-based vision program in Lee County. Through the use of portable vision screening tools, services are delivered directly within Lee County School District schools—reaching students who may otherwise go without needed vision care.
These tools have allowed the Clinic to operate effectively in both school and community settings, extending services beyond the limitations of a traditional clinic environment. This approach ensures that care is not only available, but accessible in spaces that are familiar and convenient for children and their families.
The Power of Early Detection
An important outcome of this initiative has been the ability to identify vision problems earlier—often before a child recognizes symptoms or a concern is raised at home or in the classroom.
This reinforces a critical lesson: meeting children where they are can be far more effective than relying on families to navigate barriers to care on their own.
Early detection is essential to preventing long-term vision complications, improving academic performance, and supporting overall development.
A Life Changed: Petrona’s Story
At just five years old, Petrona was already facing challenges no child should have to endure.
Born with congenital cataracts, her world was blurred and uncertain. She struggled to see clearly, often bumping into furniture and walls. Simple tasks that most children do independently required constant assistance. She couldn’t safely move around on her own, and school activities felt overwhelming.
When Petrona came to the Lions Clinic, doctors quickly recognized the severity of her condition. Because of her youth and the complexity of her cataracts, she was referred to a trusted partner, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Naples, where specialized pediatric eye surgeries are performed.
Thanks to this partnership, Petrona’s parents did not have to bear the financial burden of surgery. What could have been an impossible situation for the family became a moment of hope.
The surgery was life-changing.
After her procedure, Petrona could see clearly and independently. She no longer needed constant guidance to move around. She began attending school confidently, playing alongside other children, and even participating in a school play—something that once would have been unimaginable.
Today, Petrona is living the childhood she deserves.
Her story is a powerful reminder of what the gift of sight truly means. Through compassionate care, strong partnerships, and community support, a young girl’s future was transformed.
Expanding Access and Informing the Future
Petrona’s story reflects the broader impact of expanding access to care.
By delivering services directly within schools and strengthening partnerships for specialized treatment, this approach ensures that children receive timely and appropriate vision care—even when barriers exist.
It has also provided valuable insight into how mobile service delivery can expand reach and improve follow-through, helping inform future program growth and demonstrating how innovative care models can better serve underserved populations.
