QUICK POLL RECAP: MENTAL HEALTH SCREENING IN FREE CLINICS
Thank you to the 69 clinics that participated in our recent quick poll on mental health screenings. Your input provides valuable insight into how free and charitable clinics across Florida are supporting the mental health needs of their patients.
Key takeaways from the poll:
-
Most clinics (over 85%) conduct mental health screenings as part of their intake process, during primary care visits, or in behavioral health appointments.
-
Top tools in use include:
-
PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9): The most commonly used tool, designed to screen for depression severity and monitor treatment progress.
-
GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7): A quick and reliable screening tool for generalized anxiety disorder.
-
PHQ-2: A two-question pre-screen often used as an initial assessment for depression before administering the full PHQ-9.
-
MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination): Used to assess cognitive function, particularly in older adults.
-
ACE Questionnaire (Adverse Childhood Experiences): Identifies early life trauma that may be linked to long-term health and behavioral outcomes.
-
CAGE & AUDIT: Short questionnaires used to screen for problematic alcohol use.
-
C-SSRS (Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale): A validated tool for identifying patients at risk for suicide.
-
-
Timing of screenings varies, but most clinics conduct them at intake or during primary care visits. Behavioral health visits and case-by-case evaluations are also common.
-
Who conducts screenings? Nurses, medical assistants, and behavioral health providers are most frequently responsible, with some clinics involving volunteer providers, front desk staff, or ARNPs.
