When Something Didn’t Seem Right

During what began as a routine annual visit at Little Lights Dentistry, 12-year-old Maria mentioned pain on the lower right side of her jaw. Her mother also noticed visible swelling—something that raised immediate concern.

Rather than dismissing the symptoms, the dental team acted quickly.

Maria was evaluated immediately by Little Lights dentist, Dr. St-Preux, and a panoramic X-ray was taken. Based on the findings, Maria was referred right away to a local oral surgeon. Recognizing the potential complexity of her condition, the surgeon recommended further evaluation at a larger medical institution.

Acting Quickly, Coordinating Care

With urgency and coordination, Dr. St-Preux worked with Maria’s pediatrician to request a CT scan through Cleveland Clinic-Martin. The scan was performed at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, ensuring Maria had access to the advanced imaging needed to better understand her condition.

The very next day, Maria was referred to Nova Southeastern University for specialized diagnostic testing and treatment planning.

A Critical Diagnosis

Following evaluation, Maria was diagnosed with Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that requires ongoing monitoring and care.

Because of the swift action taken at her initial dental visit, Maria’s condition was identified early—allowing her care team to move forward with an appropriate treatment plan without delay.

Access to Care Made the Difference

With financial assistance from Cleveland Clinic-Martin, Maria was able to undergo the necessary surgery. Today, she continues to receive ongoing care and follow-up treatment through a coordinated network that includes Little Lights Dentistry and Nova Southeastern University.
